Cop dies, 3 injured in Iloilo grenade blast

ILOILO CITY -- A member of a police bomb disposal unit died and three others were wounded when a grenade accidentally exploded inside their office near a shopping mall here around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, an official said.

Chief Superintendent Isagani Cuevas, Western Visayas police director, identified the fatality as Senior Police Officer 3 Rafael Managuit who died from shrapnel wounds at the Iloilo St. Paul's Hospital where the victims were taken.

The injured included Police Officers 2 Abundio Diaz Jr., Roque Gimeno III, Alberto Sardua Jr.

The victims are members of the Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) of the Iloilo City Police Office.

Citing initial reports, Cuevas said the grenade was recovered by the team from the roof of barangay (village) councilor Yolanda Senato of East Baluarte in Molo District after she reported it to the police around 4:45 a.m.

The team brought the grenade to the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) office of the City Hall detachment located near the mall.

But the grenade exploded while the EOD members were examining it.
